How to claim physiotherapy through workers compensation in NSW

The process can feel unfamiliar after an injury. Here is how to get started, and where we can help.

  1. Tell your employer

Report the injury as soon as you can, including symptoms that developed gradually. Your employer notifies their workers compensation insurer.

  2. See your GP

Your doctor can assess the injury and provide a Certificate of Capacity. This explains your condition, capacity for work and treatment needs.

  3. Confirm your claim details

Ask for your claim number and insurer contact details. We can help check the funding arrangements before your appointment.

  4. Review your progress

If further treatment is needed, we send your insurer an Allied Health Treatment Request with your progress and proposed plan.

Your claim and treatment circumstances determine what is covered. We will help confirm the details before you proceed.

For your first appointment

Have your claim number, insurer contact details, Certificate of Capacity and any relevant scans or reports ready if you have them. Missing something? Call us and we will help you work out what is needed.

What your recovery plan looks like at PTC

Our four stages give your rehabilitation a clear direction. Your starting point and pace depend on your injury, progress and goals.

  1. Restoration

    Manage pain. Move more comfortably.

We assess your injury and how it affects your day. Treatment, practical advice and appropriate exercises help you manage symptoms and start moving with more confidence.

  2. Rebuilding

    Build strength for everyday tasks.

We gradually increase your strength and what your body can tolerate. Your exercises reflect what you need to do, from carrying groceries to lifting, reaching or standing at work.

  3. Resilience

    Trust your body again.

We practise the activities you are working towards and check how you respond. Where work duties are part of your plan, we help your care team understand your current capacity.

  4. Thriving

Keep doing what matters to you.

We help you maintain your progress with a plan you can use independently. You will know how to manage flare ups, continue exercising and recognise when you need further support.

We review your plan as you progress. Recovery can include setbacks, and the stages may overlap.

Alongside treatment, we help coordinate the next steps with your GP, insurer and employer. With your consent, we share relevant updates about your progress and what you can manage.

FAQs

Workers compensation physio questions

Do I have to pay for physiotherapy?

Treatment costs depend on your claim and the funding arrangements. We can help confirm what your insurer will cover before treatment starts. If funding is not confirmed, we will explain the options and any fees before you proceed.

How many sessions can I have?

There is no single number that suits every injury. Under current NSW rules, up to four initial consultations may be available without prior insurer approval when treatment begins within three months of injury and it has not already been treated by a provider in the same physical practitioner group. Different rules apply in other circumstances. We check what applies to you and request further treatment when needed.

What if my claim hasn't been accepted yet?

Call us with the details you have. We can help clarify what is needed and whether treatment funding is available while your claim is being assessed. Booking an appointment does not itself confirm insurer funding.

What workplace injuries do you treat?

We assess and treat physical injuries such as back and neck pain, shoulder injuries, sprains and strains, knee injuries, overuse conditions and recovery after surgery. Your assessment helps us decide what treatment is appropriate and whether you need other medical care.
